Abstract

This study aims to reflect on the contribution of the philosophy of Islamic sciences course which is a mandatory subject for the Islamic Studies doctoral program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga as an example of providing a basis and framework for thinking in the context of developing Islamic sciences, especially in Indonesia. This study is a qualitative study that focuses on the contribution of Islamic sciences philosophy courses to discussions of scientific development (contribution to knowledge) in James Peirce's progress of science perspective. This study suggests several conclusions. First, this course contributes significantly to 3 things, namely the laying of demarcation lines in Islamic studies, progress of science, and new reading models of revelation. Second, these three frameworks mean that Muslim scientists do not need to turn a blind eye to social sciences originating from Western traditions. A clear separation between the study of Islamic religious doctrine and the study of Islamic thought means that scientists do not need to be afraid of being contaminated by the western worldview which was born from secular epistemology. Lastly, methodological tools born from Western civilization were not immediately rejected in the development of Islamic studies. There needs to be a critical reception effort in adopting this perspective to develop Islamic studies for solving ummahâs problems.
